TOTTENHAM boss Glenn Hoddle is being tipped to make a trip to France on Sunday as he ponders a beat-the-deadline swoop for Lens star Papa Bouba Diop.

Hoddle is still seeking a midfield recruit, despite landing United States youngster Bobby Convey, and is an admirer of Diop's powerful work at club and international level.

Marseille provide the opposition for Lens in Stade Bollaert on Sunday night, and Hoddle is likely to be in the stands, monitoring his target's performance.

Spurs begin the season with a match against Birmingham City on Saturday at St Andrews, giving their manager plenty of time to travel across The Channel.

Lens will resist any attempts to buy Diop, as the 6ft 5in giant is a popular and influential figure at the club.

The leggy Senegal international is the man, of course, who scored the opening goal of the 2002 World Cup - the shock winner against holders France.
