NEWCASTLE UNITED are being linked with a summer move for Tottenham full back Stephen Carr.

Magpies boss Sir Bobby Robson has still to fully solve his side`s defensive problems, despite the arrival of the impressive Jonathan Woodgate from Leeds, and Carr would be a quality addition to his playing staff.

The full back has overcome injuries that ended his hopes of playing at the World Cup finals for Republic of Ireland to perform well for Spurs at the end of this season.

Carr has a further two seasons to run on his White Hart Lane deal, but could be made available in the summer.

Spurs said earlier in the season that they would not allow Carr to walk away from the club on a free, in the same way Sol Campbell did in 2001.

A host of clubs have put Carr under scrutiny, and The Magpies have joined the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal in placing the defender on their wish lists.

Carr is a massive fans` favourite at White Hart Lane and the speculation regarding the defender`s future could well prompt Spurs to offer him  a lucrative new deal to stay in North London.

With Newcastle guaranteed of a place in next season`s Champions League, Robson is likely to be given funds to strengthen the squad in areas he sees are weak.

Robson could free up a place in his squad by offloading Wayne Quinn.

The 26-year-old still has a season to run on his Magpies contract, but has failed to prove himself to Robson and could be on his way out of Tyneside in the summer.

Robson said: "He has one year left, but he`s not in the side.

"It depends on whether he wants to stay, but I would think that he wants first-team football."

A player unlikely to be forced out of St James` Park is Nikos Dabizas, with Robson urging him to fight for his place.

The former England boss said: "We will be happy to keep Dabi if he will fight for his place.

"If Caldwell goes - and I don`t know if he will - we want Dabi to stay. We want four centre halves.

"He`s still the equal of many players here and I haven`t forgotten him."
