TOTTENHAM slipped to a disappointing 3-2 defeat at the hands of Queens Park Rangers, while Sunderland had ace marksman Kevin Phillips to thank for their 1-0 win over Sint Truiden.

Phillips has had a slow start to pre-season following his stomach operation, but proved that he is near peak fitness with a goal in his first match of the summer.

The former Watford man scored the only goal of the game on 10 minutes, converting a Thomas Butler cross, with Sunderland having most of the play.

Spurs suffered a shock reverse at Division Two QPR.  Glenn Hoddle`s men never recovered from going 2-0 down, but the encouraging aspect of the match for the White Hart Lane outfit was the 90-minute effort by Stephen Carr.

The Republic of Ireland full back missed the World Cup due to injury, but he showed he is on the way back with a solid display.
