MICHAEL CARRICK has been ruled out of England's Under-21 European Championships squad with a groin injury

The West Ham midfielder has been struggling to be fit in time for the finals in Switzerland but appears to have run out of time.

David Platt does not have to name his 22-man squad until Wednesday but the former Nottingham Forest coach is likely to select a replacement for Carrick in the next day or two..

"It's a disappointment, yes, but at the end of the day, you've got to live with that,"  said Platt.

"I've got no qualms with the people that I'm bringing in. They've got quality about them.

"Clearly you want to take out the players that you've named in your squad. Having said that, that's disrespectful to the players that are coming in, and I have no qualms whatsoever about bringing them in."

Tottenham defender Ledely King will also miss the tournament with Martin Taylor of Blackburn taking his place.
