TOTTENHAM have rejected a loan bid from Crewe Alexandra for talented young defender Anthony Gardner.

The former Port Vale centre back made his name in that area of England, and Dario Gradi is obviously an admirer of his stylish play.

However, the veteran Alex manager`s approach was rebuffed, as was a similar bid to land Manchester City`s Richard Jobson, who joined Watford in midweek.

"We have tried to get Jobson and then Gardner in this week, without success," revealed Gradi.

Gardner is on the fringe of first team action at White Hart Lane, after recovering from a thigh injury, and he is viewed by some people as a possible long-term replacement for Sol Campbell.

"My target for the season is to keep in the squad, see what happens and, hopefully, get a debut somewhere," said the 20-year-old.
