Flitcroft up for 'big' Tuesday

David Flitcroft is happy Bury started their important week with a win after Ryan Lowe's header gave them a 1-0 win over Portsmouth.

Striker Lowe headed home Joe Riley's pinpoint cross from the right to leave the visitors two points behind third-placed Wycombe. Bury set a new club record of seven successive away wins and have now not conceded away from Gigg Lane in 10 hours. A win against fifth-placed Southend on Tuesday will fire the Shakers above Wycombe and into the automatic promotion places. Flitcroft said: "I am excited for Tuesday night. It is a really big game and I'm excited for a really big crowd. "We are happy to come from behind and catch up with the top three and I'm really happy with the way we have done that. "To get that goal when we did today, we have done really really well. Sometimes you control it in possession and sometimes you control it out of possession. "Today we did well out of possession and all we had to do was get the one goal at the end of the first half. "It was good to get that goal as it could have been very different if we hadn't. "It was an absolutely stunning bit of play." Jed Wallace forced Nick Pope into two saves in a minute, as the midfielder caused problems with his free role behind the strikers. Wallace was at it again when he latched onto a Craig Westcarr dinked pass but Pope was equal to it, and it was the 21-year-old who jinxed past Adam El-Abd before dragging wide in the 37th minute. But for the hosts' first half dominance it was Bury who took the lead on the cusp of half-time as substitute Lowe netted his 10th goal of the season. Pompey have lost both their games under caretaker boss Gary Waddock, after Andy Awford was sacked on Monday. But Waddock has reiterated his desire to remain with the south-coast side after this season. He said: "I want to be part of this going forward. "This club deserves to be challenging where Bury are, not only that they should be challenging for the championship. "The club asked me to take the caretaker role until the end of the season, it's up to the club what they want to do after that. "I'm sure there have been a number of managers who have applied for the role and it's down to the club to decide who is the right man for the club. "The players have to finish the season on a high and get that away result right and then finish the season well here with a good result."
