Pompey defender poised to pen new deal

Veteran defender Hermann Hreidarsson is set to pen a new one-year contract at Portsmouth. The 36-year-old endured a difficult opening to the 2010/11 campaign and looked set to be on his way out of the club at one stage. He was able to recover, however, and made 29 appearances for Pompey in the Championship last term. Those outings have seen him offered an extension to his current deal and he is expected to agree fresh terms by the end of the week.

Character

"We are really pleased about Hermann deciding to return," Pompey boss Steve Cotterill told The News. "He is a good lad who showed some real character coming back last year. "He has got another year's deal so, hopefully, he will come back after a bit of a break refreshed and raring to go again. "We've given him a bit of a longer break like a couple of the others because they were still playing over the summer. "It is now only a matter of him coming back into the UK and signing the contract. I expect that will all be sorted out in the next 48 hours."
