Harry Redknapp is expecting Milan Baros to make his Portsmouth debut against Manchester United next Wednesday.
Baros is undergoing a medical at Pompey with a view to joining the club on loan from Lyon for the rest of the season.
The deal is likely to be completed on Monday and the Czech Republic striker should go straight into the squad for the trip to Old Trafford.
With Pompey currently short of options in attack, Redknapp admits he is anxious to have Baros in his plans to face the champions.
"With the four boys at the African Nations Cup we are now down to one striker in Benjani Mwaruwari and we need Baros," said Redknapp.
"He will be available for Wednesday."
David Nugent could miss the Premier League fixture after picking up an injury in the FA Cup fourth round win over Plymouth.
Redknapp added: "He did a groin. It could be a hernia, we just don't know."
