French side Rennes have confirmed that Arnold Mvuemba has joined Portsmouth on loan until the end of the season.

The French Under 21 international arrives to boost Harry Redknapp's bid for a European finish, whilst the South Coast side also have the option to make the deal permanent if Mvuemba impresses until May.

The 21-year-old has failed to command a regular starting place in Ligue 1 this season and first travelled to Fratton Park for a trial period in December.

The midfielder clearly caught Redknapp's attention and has now been offered the chance to make a name for himself in the Premiership.

Mvuemba made 33 league appearances for Rennes following his debut in January 2004, and becomes Portsmouth's first signing of the January transfer window.

Rennes have also disposed of another midfielder in Youssef Hadji, with the Moroccan international expected to complete a permanent move to Nancy on Thursday.
