Pompey linked with Macedonian

Portsmouth have been linked with Macedonian international Nikolce Noveski.

Premiership outfit Portsmouth have been linked with a move for Macedonian international Nikolce Noveski.

The defender played a key role in Macedonia's fine 0-0 draw with England at the weekend, before scoring in his country's 3-0 win in Andorra on Wednesday night.

Noveski currently plays for Mainz in the German Bundesliga but appears to have caught the eye of Pompey boss Harry Redknapp thanks to his performances on the international stage.

The German press are now reporting that the 27-year-old could be in line for a move to Fratton Park in the January transfer window, and Mainz coach Jurgen Klopp has conceded the club could have a battle on their hands to keep the defender.

However, the Mainz boss is determined to try and keep hold of Noveski despite the apparent interest from the cash-rich South Coast outfit.

"Of course we want to keep him and Nikolce knows his importance at our club," said Klopp.

"But it is obvious that we don't have the biggest chance to make him stay."

Noveski has quickly established himself in the Bundesliga since his switch from Wismut Aue in 2004, and is currently tied to the Bruchweg-Stadium outfit until 2007.

As a result Mainz may be tempted into a January sale rather than risk losing the tall defender for nothing at the end of the season.
