Portsmouth will make a late bid to snap up Cameroon star Valery Mezague before the transfer window closes at midnight.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp is keen to add to his squad after a promising start to the season, and believes that Montpellier's Mezague would be an ideal recruit.

"He is a really strong young midfield player who would add strength in that department," Redknapp told the club's official website.

"He would be competition to the middle where we would start to look strong when I have Amdy Faye and Aliou Cisse available again. But it's not a done deal."

Portsmouth have picked up four points from their opening three games, including a fine 4-2 win against Fulham on Monday evening.

Mezague has spent time on trial at the club, evidently impressing Redknapp in the spell.

The African suffered serious head injuries in a car crash back in 2003, but recovered quickly to make a return to playing for Montpellier last season.
