Lee was hopeful of landing the England Under-20 captain but with O'Neil bagging a brace in the 6-1 demolition of Leeds on Saturday it seems his chances are limited.
"I spoke to Gary on Friday evening and at that time he didn't know that he was playing," said Lee.
"I just phoned him to wish him all the best if he did play, and I had a feeling that he would after I spoke to Harry Redknapp last week.
"I told Gary that if he got a chance he could play in the Premier League easily, and he could score goals.
"About an hour later Harry phoned me and said he was going to play Gary.
"I said he was ready and he wouldn't let Harry down, and I'm absolutely delighted that he's played and scored the two goals."Meanwhile, Lee has struck a deal with Portsmouth to extend the loan of Jamie Vincent for an extra two months.
The Bescot Stadium outfit will hold talks with the 28-year-old at the end of the week in a bid to thrash out the details of his extended stay.
Vincent's first month at Walsall does not expire until the weekend, but the postponement of the Saddlers' match at Sheffield United on Saturday means the weekend draw at Bradford was the last match of the initial four weeks.
The former Bournemouth and Huddersfield player is completely out of the first-team picture at Portsmouth and Lee will be hoping to persuade him that he stands more chance of making a name for himself with Walsall.
