The Premiership new boys have enjoyed a marvellous start to the campaign, and would have had maximum points but for a last-gasp equaliser by Manchester City last Saturday.
Harry Redknapp still feels his squad lacks strength in depth and he is desperate not to miss out on the frantic transfer activity anticipated ahead of Sunday's deadline.
"We hope Paul will be another addition," chairman Milan Mandaric told the club's official website. "But, if we don't succeed, then we are looking aggressively and have others we are ready to pursue."
Redknapp is looking elsewhere after failing to land top target Argentinian international Juan Pablo Sorin from Cruzeiro.
Leeds United left back Ian Harte is one of the South Coast outfit's fall-back options.
Meanwhile, the Fratton Park boss is delighted to have signed Chelsea new boy Alexei Smertin on a season-long loan deal.
"He is another quality player and every addition strengthens our squad a little more," claimed the former West Ham chief.
Redknapp had originally denied that the Russian international was joining the club, although he did reveal his admiration for the midfielder.
