BLACKBURN ROVERS boss Graeme Souness is optimistic he can pip Portsmouth in the race to sign Millwall starlet Steven Reid.

Both clubs have had bids for the Republic of Ireland international accepted by the First Division club and are set to talk to the midfielder.

Rovers have been long-standing suitors of the 22-year-old and have had previous offers of £2 million rejected by The Lions.

Following the sale of Damien Duff, Rovers have extra cash to spend and it is believed the accepted fee is in the region of £2.7 million.

Souness is keen to add Reid to his squad to provide cover in the engine room but concedes a deal is far from being completed, particularly with Premiership new boys Portsmouth rivalling him for the player's signature.

"We've been given permission to speak to the player but we are a long way from signing him," said Souness.

"Steven is one for the future but he is also one who could come in and shake things up now.

"He would give me valuable cover."
