PORTSMOUTH have matched Blackburn Rovers' offer for Millwall winger Steven Reid and have also handed a trial to former Manchester City star Georgi Kinkladze.

Reid had looked all set to seal a deal with Blackburn, who have been keen on the Irishman for a number of months.

The 22-year-old has already held talks with Rovers and thinking over their offer, but now Pompey are hoping to hijack their bid.

"We are at the same stage as Blackburn are at," admitted Pompey assistant Jim Smith. "We need at least three more players because we are not a Premiership squad yet."

With Smith's comments in mind, Pompey have also moved for Kinkladze.

The Georgian star left Derby County earlier this summer after his contract expired.

He rejected the offer to remain with the Division One outfit, even though he was voted their Player of the Year, because he wanted another crack at The Premiership.

Now Portsmouth have made a move for him and the ex-Ajax man is excited at the chance of earning a move to Fratton Park.

"Harry Redknapp and Jim Smith are great men for giving me this chance."
