PORTSMOUTH boss Harry Redknapp says that he wants to sign Deon Burton permanently, but only on a free transfer.

Burton has been a success at Fratton Park scoring three goals in his six games since joining on loan from Derby in August.

Redknapp would like to keep the Jamaican striker with Pompey permanently but says the club are not willing to pay a transfer fee for him.

"We're just waiting to see what happens," said Redknapp.

"We're not going to buy him though.

"It's just a case of whether Derby will let him go on a free or whether they decide to hold out for a fee for him."

Burton returns to Pride Park after his loan spell ends on Saturday but The Rams are looking to offload him due to the severe financial problems.

Redknapp is hoping they will opt to cut Burton off the wage bill and sacrifice any transfer fee.
