PORTSMOUTH are set to make a £1 million bid for Luton Town`s Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Gary Doherty.

Pompey chairman is likely to give manager Tony Pulis a cash injection of at least £2 million, and he is very keen on the young Irish star.

The versatile Doherty has played in defence and attack this year for Lennie Lawrence`s side and is considered to be one of Kenilworth Road`s beast players.

He has also been watched by a number of Premiership clubs and was linked to Leeds United earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Gary Connolly looks set to leave Fratton Park, and could be set to join Southend United where he has been on trial for the last two weeks.
