Reading have issued a positive update on several of their injured players, with Anton Ferdinand and Danny Williams closest to first-team returns.

Ferdinand has been hampered by a hamstring injury for the past month but the 29-year-old played an hour for the under-21s on Monday evening.

The former West Ham, Sunderland and QPR defender has yet to feature for the Royals since moving to the Madejski Stadium in August.

USA midfielder Williams has been out since April with a knee injury which ended his hopes of featuring at the Brazil 2014 World Cup but he came through 45 minutes in the same game at Brighton.

"I'm positive and ready," Williams told BBC Radio Berkshire.

"I'm itching. Everyone that knows me knows I love football, I love to be on the pitch when the fans are screaming and shouting, it gives me an extra 10 or 20 per cent.

"I love being on the pitch, fighting for my team-mates, the whole club and I feel like a new signing."

He added: "It's been a frustrating three months and it was more frustrating when I heard the news I had to have surgery because I missed the World Cup.

"I've left that behind me now, I'm looking forward to helping the team; we still have a lot of games and I want to help the team get in the play-offs."

Garath McCleary, Jem Karacan, Danny Guthrie, Aaron Tshibola and Shaun Cummings are all making progress, but Craig Tanner is still having tests on a knee problem.
