Brian McDermott is planning showdown talks with Reading midfielder Danny Guthrie following his refusal to participate in Tuesday's defeat at Sunderland's Stadium of Light.
Guthrie has apologised to supporters for withdrawing from the game that saw Reading suffer a 3-0 defeat on Wearside, claiming his "head just wasn't right" and now wants to put the incident behind him.
The 25-year-old has played only six matches since his free transfer from Newcastle in the summer and Royals boss McDermott admits his future at the Madejski Stadium is uncertain.
He said: "I need to speak to him. We need to have a conversation."
Guthrie is reported to have been fined two weeks' wages by Reading for the incident.
