Zat Knight has urged Bolton manager Owen Coyle to try and get Nigel Re-Coker back to the club to bolster their midfield.
Coyle has revealed he is keen to sign a holding player before the transfer window closes and Reo-Coker is available, having not yet found a new club following his departure from the Reebok Stadium at the end of last season.
Reo-Coker activated a release clause in his own contract after the Trotters suffered relegation and he is still hopeful of securing a deal with a Premier League club.
But Knight believes he would be the ideal player to help Bolton as they try and bounce back to the top flight at the first attempt.
"I've been in the manager's ear a bit to try and get Nigel back," Knight said in the
Manchester Evening News.
"It would be nice to have that kind of player - not necessarily starting, but to have that choice.
"When you are winning 2-1, maybe it would be better to shut up shop.
"Darren Pratley, Mark Davies and Keith Andrews are all good, attacking-type midfielders.
"So, maybe we do need someone who's happy to sit and give the ball to those lads."

Knight remains in regular contact with Reo-Coker and would love to play alongside him once again, although he accepts it is not his decision to make.
He explained: "I've had a word with Nigel and we speak every day. But it's a decision for him and the manager.
"I don't know if the manager wants him, and I don't know if he wants to come back.
"But I've said to Nigel that there's still nine or 10 months left of the season.
"Even if he could just get a contract for that length of time, he would be fantastic for us.
"But that's just me thinking and talking - it's the manager, the money people and the agents who do that kind of things. It's out of our hands."
