Sky Sports understands that Reading are eyeing up an ambitious swoop for Brighton striker Craig Mackail-Smith.

The Royals have money to spend following their recent investment and are looking to bolster their attacking options before the transfer window slams shut.

Reading are currently fourth in the Championship standings and manager Brian McDermott wants to add to his squad to boost their push for promotion.

He is believed to have identified Mackail-Smith as a target after being impressed by his performances for Championship rivals Brighton.

However, the Scotland international is such a key player for the Seagulls that it is unlikely they would be willing to sell.

Mackail-Smith only joined Brighton from Peterborough in the summer and signed a four-year deal at the Amex Stadium.
