David Moyes has challenged Royston Drenthe to step up and earn himself a contract with Everton.
The Toffees boss brought in the 24-year-old this August on a season-long loan from Real Madrid.
The Dutchman, who can play in defence or midfield, was quick to get off the mark in terms of goals having netted twice for the Blues.
However, he has also found himself with his first blot on his English football record following two bookable offences against Chelsea in the League Cup.
Despite that dismissal, Moyes has been satisfied with Drenthe's start to his Everton career and wants him to emulate the likes of Mikel Arteta and Steven Pienaar who both came on loan and revived their careers in Merseyside.
"Royston has done okay. He's had some moments that have helped us and some moments that have worried us," the Scotsman told the Daily Mirror.
"But it is early days for him here. He is in the last year of his contract, he's on loan and there won't be a fee for him.
"We did the same with Mikel (Arteta) and Steven (Pienaar) and it was a great opportunity for them."
