Reading are set to be without Andre Bikey and Adam Federici for the start of the 2008/09 campaign.
Cameroonian defender Bikey has been included in his country's squad for the Beijing games, while back-up keeper Federici has received a call-up from Australia.
Both will definitely miss the season opener at Nottingham Forest on 10th August as well as a Carling Cup date with Dagenham & Redbridge two days later.
Their return to the fold is then dependent on the performance of their respective nations, with a prolonged run in the competition expected to rule them out of games against Plymouth and Charlton.
However, the Royals have received a timely boost ahead of their forthcoming tilt at Championship glory with the news that Marek Matejovsky should be fit to face Forest.
The Czech Republic midfielder sustained an ankle injury while on Euro 2008 duty, but is now back in light training and club physio, Jon Fearn, expects him to be in contention for a starting role by the time the club head to the City Ground.
"He came back to us on Monday and is progressing well," Fearn told the club's official website.
"We're confident he'll be fit for the start of the season.
"He's only started comfortably running this week so it's a case of progression from there."
