Reading's Brynjar Gunnarsson is out for at least two months after rupturing medial knee ligaments in training.
The influential midfielder picked up the 'significant injury' in an accidental collision with goalkeeper Adam Federici last week.
It is the latest setback for the Icelandic international who was forced to miss the end of the last campaign with a groin injury.
He was just getting back to full fitness when misfortune struck - although, on the bright side, the injury could have been far worse.
Physio Jon Fearn told the club's official website: "Bryn has ruptured medial ligaments in his knee, and it will be at least a couple of months for him now.
"His luck has really stunk recently, and he's a little bit down as you would expect. The only positive to take is that it could be worse, you can often damage the cruciate ligament in this type of incident.
"It's still a significant injury and we'll be working with him to get him playing as soon as possible."
