Reading midfielder Brynjar Gunnarsson is set to undergo a scan after he injured his knee in training.
Gunnarsson struggled for fitness last term after he underwent groin surgery in a bid to cure a long-standing problem.
The Icelandic international had been looking forward to the new Championship season, however manager Steve Coppell has confirmed that he fears his latest setback could keep him out of action for some time.
Coppell told the Reading Evening Post: "He has damaged his knee and we fear some real damage, but until we have had the scan we don't know the extent.
"If it's medial damage then it could be six to eight weeks, but until we get the results we don't know what the reality is."
