Chris Armstrong has admitted that he almost quit before Neil Warnock convinced him to continue his career.

Defender grateful to former boss

Scotland hopeful Chris Armstrong has admitted that he almost quit before Neil Warnock convinced him to continue his career. Two years ago the Sheffield United defender was offered £250,000 to walk away from the game as he struggled to recover from three career-threatening knee operations. However, Armstrong has revealed that former Blades boss Neil Warnock talked him out of early retirement. The 25-year-old is now on the verge of the full Scotland team after impressing for Alex McLeish's B side in the 11 draw with the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday night.

Brilliant

Armstrong - who has played for England's Under 20 side - qualifies for Scotland due to his Scottish-born grandmother, but he admits he was close to throwing it all away "I was very close to quitting and taking the money at one stage because my knee never seemed to be right," Armstrong said in the Daily Record. "I was just fed-up getting nowhere and was thinking of doing plumbing or something. Thankfully people persuaded me to keep going and I did manage to get back. "The club had insurance cover for me which I could gave taken. But I went to see the chairman and the gaffer, Neil Warnock, and they were both brilliant. "I was really down but they convinced me to give it one more go and keep going. They gave me belief which helped me get back and I'm glad they did."
