Dave Kitson says his preparations ahead of Reading's victory over Wigan played a major part in his own performance.
Kitson grabbed the first in the 2-1 success and his all-round display earned many plaudits.
The former Cambridge United man has revealed why he believes he turned in an improved display.
"I prepared harder than ever in terms of concentration, taking the fluids on board, eating the right food and living like a priest," he told the Sun.
"Sometimes you do that and have an absolute stinker but this time it clicked - maybe it was something to do with the missus being away.
"She's on holiday in Cyprus with a mate for a week, so there's been no shopping, no housework, no this or that.
"It's been nice and quiet - just me, the TV remote control and the papers, watching and reading about football and telling myself how I was going to play on Saturday.
"It's a mental thing and when I get home I'll be on the phone to see if I can extend the wife's holiday another week!"
