Reading boss Steve Coppell has revealed that Dave Kitson is not likely to return to action until the end of the year.
Kitson has been out since the opening day of the season after suffering a knee injury in the win over Middlesbrough.
He began training again last week but picked up a hamstring injury and now faces another month on the sidelines.
And Coppell admits that Kitson's distraught reaction to the setback left everyone at the club worried about him.
"We were going to send someone round to his house last weekend on suicide watch because he was massively, massively depressed after the event," he said.
"We are looking at Christmas at the earliest. The rehabilitation process is so dull but he's got to go through it again.
"He's earning a lot of money to rehabilitate so it won't affect him."
