Reading midfielder James Harper admits he would have quit the club had they not won promotion to The Premiership.
Harper has been a revelation for Reading this term, proving an instrumental figure for Steve Coppell's Championship title winners all season.
Had he not elected to sign a new two-year deal with the Premiership new boys then he would not have been short of suitors at the close of the campaign.
Harper claims that he could have joined West Ham had he spurned his current employers and even concedes that the prospect of linking up with former manager Alan Pardew was tempting.
''Whatever happened this season I was going to play in The Premiership next year,'' he told The Sun.
''I wouldn't have minded joining up with Pards at West Ham - he was my mentor.''
