Reading chairman John Madejski has dipped into his personal fortune to fund the club's bid for Bristol City striker Leroy Lita.

The Royals have agreed an undisclosed fee for the England Under-21 international, with Lita due to discuss personal teams with the Championship club.

The fee will be revealed upon the completion of the deal, with the money not coming from the club's transfer budget.

Instead, Reading supremo Madejski has backed the judgement of manager Steve Coppell by paying for Lita out of his own pocket.

"This is a gamble our chairman has made, not within the budgets of the club," Coppell told Sky Sports News.

"The chairman is paying for the player himself out of his own pocket.

"I'm pleased he has got faith in the coaching and scouting staff and is confident enough to bring the player here."

With Lita likely to arrive to swell the Reading attack, Coppell will now turn his attention towards signing a defender.

Coppell added: "We do have a number of forwards and not enough defenders.

"We really need a couple of reinforcements there to get the symmetry and balance in the squad."
