Championship Round-Up

Ipswich's charge towards the Premiership shows no sign of abating following a 2-1 win.

Ipswich Town's charge towards the Premiership shows no sign of abating following a 2-1 success over Leicester City at Portman Road.

The East Anglian outfit began the day five points clear at the top of table ahead of Wigan and maintained their advantage with The Latics winning at Crewe.

Ipswich wasted little time taking the lead with Shefki Kuqi heading the home side in front less than two minutes in for the fastest goal in England.

Mark de Vries doubled the home side's lead when he failed to handle Darren Currie's left wing corner and inadvertently scored past Ian Walker.

Jordan Stewart's superb left-footed free-kick pulled one back for the visitors, however The Foxes were unable to muster a late equaliser.

Wigan started brightly enough at Crewe with Jason Roberts' early goal putting the visitors ahead before Andy White equalised just before half time.

However, Wigan were not to be denied and Nathan Ellington's penalty along with Roberts' second goal of the game secured a 3-1 away win.

Sunderland remain in third, but only on goal difference, following a 4-2 thumping of Watford at the Stadium of Light.

Marcus Stewart was the hero for the home side with a superb-trick while Chris Brown also got in on the act for Mick McCarthy's side.

Bruce Dyer pulled two goals back for The Hornets late on, but they were not enough to alter the result in the North East.

Leeds United's good form continued following a 3-1 win over Reading at Elland Road.

David Healy opened the scoring for the home side before a brace from debutant Rob Hulse wrapped up the points for The Whites.

Lloyd Owusu did pull one back for the visitors, but it proved nothing more than a consolation.

Preston climbed over The Royals following a come from behind 2-1 victory over QPR at Loftus Road.

Paul Furlong put the home side in front, however goals after half-time from David Nugent and Chris Lucketti turned things around.

The Lilywhites were made to hang on late on when Eddie Lewis was sent off, but the visitors held out for the win.

Burnley bounced back from their home loss to Leeds with a 2-0 win over Coventry City at Highfield Road.

Second half goals from John Oster, his first for the club, and Ian Moore condemned The Sky Blues to their fifth successive league defeat.

Early goals from Peter Thorne and James Collins lifted Cardiff to a 2-0 win over Brighton while Gillingham remain in the drop zone after being held to a goalless draw by Millwall.

Plymouth were given a scare by Rotherham at Home Park before The Pilgrims secured a share of the spoils.

Andy Monkhouse's opener put The Millers ahead, however Paul Wotton's penalty after the break ensured the game finished all-square at 1-1.
