Reading left back Nicky Shorey will miss the rest of the season with a foot infection.

The defender has been hospitalised since last week and the club physio Jon Fearn has confirmed that the player's season is over.

Fearn told the club's website: "Unfortunately Nicky's out for the season.

"He's had an MRI scan which showed the infection in the bone in his left foot. It's a condition called osteomyelitis, and he needs rest and antibiotics for six weeks."

In other news, Crystal Palace defender Darren Powell (pictured) will not be joining The Royals.

A fee had been agreed between the two clubs but the centre back is currently recovering from injury and is not fit enough to take a full medical.

Director of football Nick Hammond refused to rule out a move in the future for the unfortunate stopper though.

"Darren won't be joining us at the moment because he is not in a position to take a medical, and we would never sign any player before giving them a full medical," he told the club's website.

"But there's a chance we could revisit the deal in the summer."
