Boateng missed Boro's crushing 3-0 defeat of local rivals Sunderland on Tuesday, after suffering the injury in training on the morning of the game.
"I thought he was immense against Manchester United and I was disappointed he couldn't play against Sunderland," said manager Steve McClaren.
"Geremi and Jonathan Greening were excellent covering so much ground with George missing in midfield.
"That sums this team up - they are young and fresh and could run all day."
Boateng will have a fitness test on Friday to assess whether he can make the trip to Goodison Park.
Meanwhile, both Boro and Ipswich Town are reported to have made enquiries for Reading striker Darius Henderson.
The 21-year-old is recognised as one of the Royals' most outstanding prospects and although he was limited to substitute appearances last season, he still made an impact.
Both George Burley and McClaren are said to have asked counterpart Alan Pardew to be kept informed about the player's situation.
