Bolton have signed defender Paddy McCarthy from Crystal Palace on loan until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old has appeared in two matches for the Eagles this year, but both have come in the Capital One Cup, and he returned from a loan spell with Sheffield United in December.

McCarthy includes Charlton and Leicester among his former employers and Wanderers boss Neil Lennon is pleased to add an experienced figure to his injury-hit side.

"Paddy is 31, a man, and has leadership qualities," said Neil Lennon.

"He will head the ball and is an ideal replacement for David (Wheater).

"Paddy will bring bags of experience at this level and a hunger to play. He's been in and out and hasn't played that much since being on loan at Sheffield United.

"There will be a willingness there to come and impress."

The signing of McCarthy had been mooted to a Neil Lennon impressionist when a prankster tricked West Brom manager Tony Pulis into thinking he was the Northern Irishman in a video which went viral recently.

Asked about the coincidence, Lennon added: "It got me thinking!

"We've been in touch about a few centre-halves and Paddy was on the list and thankfully we were able to get over the line with this one.

"He's keen to come and he's keen to play. I think he'll be a good type as well."
