Sky Sports understands striker Joe Mason is set to sign a new deal at Cardiff and then join Championship rivals Bolton on loan.

Mason spent four months of last season on loan at Bolton in two stints after finding his first-team chances limited at Cardiff in the Premier League last term.

The 23-year-old impressed during his loan stint at Bolton, scoring six goals in 16 appearances, and Bolton boss Dougie Freedman had made Mason one of his top targets.

The summer arrivals of Adam Le Fondre and Federico Macheda have increased competition for places in Ole Gunnar Solskajer's side and he is thought to be willing to loan out Mason again so that he can play regular first-team football this season.

Mason, who is under contract until 2016, is still highly-regarded at the Cardiff City Stadium and they plan to tie him down to a new long-term deal before sanctioning his loan switch to Bolton.
