Charlton sign versatile player on free contract

Andy Hughes has joined Charlton Athletic on a free transfer after his contract at Scunthorpe was terminated. The versatile 33-year-old, who can play in midfield or at full-back, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at The Valley. Hughes enjoyed promotion from League One with Leeds two seasons ago and is hoping for similar success with the Addicks. He told Charlton's official website: "It's a fantastic move for me. "The plan at this club is to try and get out of this league as quickly as possible, and I'm delighted the manager wants me to be a part of that." Hughes began his career with Oldham back in 1996 and has also spent time at Notts County, Reading and Norwich. The experienced player becomes the Addicks' 15th signing this summer.
