Bolton manager Owen Coyle has revealed he could offer a contract to American midfielder Stuart Holden.
The 24-year-old United States international is a free agent after leaving the Houston Dynamo and has been training at the Reebok Stadium.
Aberdeen-born Holden has also been linked with Blackburn but new Trotters boss Coyle could swoop to make him his first signing.
"Stuart has come in and trained well with us," he said. "It (his situation) is something we will look at in the next few days.
"We have a good group of players but we are looking to improve the squad we have. That's an ongoing process.
"He's obviously got talent, good technique and quick feet.
"We just have to make that judgment about whether he is better than what we have already got. "
Holden signed for Sunderland in March 2005 but returned to America following an unsuccessful spell with the Black Cats.
