But Bolton boss dismisses a bid to sign Smith

Bolton Wanderers boss Gary Megson has invited French midfielder Camel Meriem for a trial, but has ruled out a move for Newcastle United's Alan Smith. Meriem is currently a free agent after leaving Monaco and recently admitted he is keen to secure a deal in the Premier League. He has been offered the chance to train with Bolton as Megson considers possible replacements for Sean Davis, who is out for the season with a knee injury. Megson is not guaranteeing a contract for Meriem, who turns 30 on Sunday, but is prepared to see if the former Bordeaux schemer can fill in for Davis. "He's out of contract, so we'll just have a look because we're in a situation with what has happened with Sean where we could do with another body in there if it can be done," said Megson. "We're not saying we're going to do anything, but he'll come over, all being well, and spend a few days training with us." The Trotters have also been linked with a move for Newcastle midfielder Smith, but while being a fan of the player, Megson is not planning an approach. He added: "I'm an admirer of Alan Smith, he's a terrific player, but there's been nothing because the transfer window is closed. "I don't know where all these things come from, but it's not here."
