Bolton are ready to let Heidar Helguson leave on loan, but they will not allow Danny Shittu exit the Reebok Stadium.
Helguson is wanted by Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers, while Derby are keen to get Shittu.
Bolton boss Gary Megson confirmed contact had been made with Rangers over Icelander Helguson.
But Shittu, who arrived in the summer from Watford, will not be allowed to talk to the Rams.
"There was contact from QPR but I can't say at the moment what will or won't happen," Megson said.
"With Danny, Paul (Jewell) phoned me on Monday to ask if he would be available but we had to say no."
Megson does not have a huge squad at his disposal and admits he wants to bring in more players in the January transfer window.
"We need more bodies and that has got to be done in January," he said.
"But it isn't a case of just signing players. It's easy to end up with 40 pros, a huge wage bill and not enough quality.
"We need to find that quality in numbers now because there are not enough players at this football club to get us through. We are gambling but we knew that at the start of the year."
