Sam Allardyce wishes Bolton Wanderers had gone that extra mile to sign Yossi Benayoun.

The Trotters were close to capturing the Israel international in the summer, before he opted for a move to West Ham.

The £2.5 million capture from Racing Santander has been one of the outstanding performers for West Ham this term, leaving Allardyce to contemplate what Bolton missed out on.

"We were very close to signing Yossi," revealed Allardyce. "We were in the boardroom and Yossi had a pen in his hand ready to sign.

"We could have gone that extra mile but because we didn't we lost out. It's a failure on our part - he has started very well for West Ham."

Bolton may come head-to-head with Benayoun in Wednesday's Carling Cup clash with West Ham should Alan Pardew include him at The Reebok.
