Portsmouth have entered the race for the services of Russian striker Dmitri Bulykin.

The hit-man has been on trial at Bolton and Crystal Palace in the past month as he bids to earn a move to England.

Both Palace and Bolton were keen to sign the 25-year-old, but have been unable to strike a deal with his club Dinamo Moscow.

The Russians are only interested in a permanent transfer, and are believed to be looking for a figure around £1.5 million.

Bulykin has spent the past few days at Fratton Park, and Pompey are making positive noises about completing a deal for the player.

"Dmitri has been with us for a few days," stated chairman Milan Mandaric.

"He is just the type we need - a top-class target-man, excellent in the box."

If Pompey do strike a deal for the Russian, it looks certain to pave the way for Ricardo Fuller to join South Coast rivals Southampton.

Saints boss Harry Redknapp, who took the Jamaican to Fratton Park from Preston, is keen to bolster his striking options.

With Kevin Phillips currently injured, Redknapp is hoping to tie up a £1 million deal before the transfer window shuts.
