Bolton Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside admits their chances of signing Rivaldo are currently '50/50' - because of interest from other clubs.
The Brazilian World Cup winner - available on a free transfer - has been looked in talks with Wanderers officials over the past few days.
Bolton are confident of securing his services on a two-year deal - but Gartside is not taking anything for granted.
"Right now, I would say it is 50/50," admitted Gartside.
"We're in danger of being hijacked because of the way it has been publicised.
"I know of at least two clubs who are interested.
"There is no magic in attracting players, you just call and keep your fingers crossed."
Bolton manager Sam Allardyce has already stated that the next 48 hours will be critical in the move.
The Trotters have also been locked in talks with Monaco's Dado Prso and another Brazilian in the shape of Marcio Amoroso.
Both strikers are available on free transfers this summer, although Amoroso - like countryman Rivaldo - is a free agent now and could sign immediately.
However, also like with Rivaldo - Bolton face stiff competition to sign either striker.
Amoroso is due in England within the next week to sign a deal with a Premiership club, with Fulham emerging as Bolton's most likely rivals for his signature.
