THIRD DIVISION, high-flyers Rochdale have signed Bolton Wanderers' striker Paul Wheatcroft on loan and he goes straight into the squad for Saturday's clash with Mansfield.

The 21-year-old frontman began his career at Manchester United, but moved to his hometown club after failing to make the breakthrough at Old Trafford. He has made just three substitute appearances for Sam Allardyce's side, all in cup competitions.

Although Dale have one of the most potent strike-forces in Division Three, both Clive Platt (pictured) and Paul Connor have failed to find the net on a regular basis this season.

Kevin Townson, a target for a number of Premiership side's, is also on the club's books and has notched four goals already this season, but Wheatcroft's arrival will add some much needed competition for places amongst Dale's frontmen.
