Tom Cleverley is in discussions over a move to Everton, which are progressing well, Sky sources understand.

The England midfielder, whose contract at Manchester United expires this month, has also had discussions with two other clubs including Aston Villa, where he has spent the past season on loan.

Villa boss Tim Sherwood has previously expressed a desire to land Cleverley on a permanent deal but the 25-year-old was keen on a move to Everton last summer before discussions broke down.

He has made 38 appearances and scored three goals this season, playing an important part in Villa's survival in the Premier League and their progression to the FA Cup final against Arsenal.

Cleverley's lack of an apparent future at Old Trafford was made clear last summer when they offered him to other clubs with no new deal on the table at United.

Cleverley was a United trainee and enjoyed successful spells on loan at Leicester, Watford and Wigan before breaking into United's first-team under Sir Alex Ferguson and making 76 appearances, scoring five goals.

He made his England debut in 2012 and has picked up 12 caps without scoring.
