Toffees man enjoying pre-season at Goodison

David Weir is enjoying his coaching role at Everton but is keeping himself fit in pre-season training in case he is called upon to play. The 42-year-old returned to Goodison Park in February to embark on a coaching career but is still eligible to feature for the Merseysiders' reserve team. Defender Weir, who made 269 appearances for Everton in his first spell at the club, is making sure all his options are open as he uses the pre-season to stay fit. "I'm loving it," he told the Liverpool Echo. "I'm still training now and again and doing a bit of coaching as well, so I've got a foot in both camps, but I'm just enjoying watching, learning and getting involved. "I'm getting a taste of what a pre-season is like at Everton after being away for a while. "I'm really enjoying that and working with Stubbsy (Alan Stubbs) and Taff (Andy Holden) - the whole experience has been really good and I'm enjoying every day."

Challenge

Former Rangers stopper Weir believes this week's pre-season friendly fixtures against Dundee United and Motherwell will prove challenging encounters for David Moyes' men. "They will be competitive games in Scotland, as they always are," said the former Scotland international, who has also played for Falkirk and Hearts. "You are guaranteed to get a game of football in regards to effort and will, so we know we'll have to be ready for that and have to match that. "Dundee United had a good season last year."
