However, Everton hit back when substitute Victor Anichebe headed home a leveller for the visitors in the 83rd minute.

The Merseysiders came into the game on the back of an impressive win over leaders Manchester City and Moyes felt their midweek exploits had an effect.

Hard

"Wigan are desperately fighting for points. It was always going to be hard. It was a hard point gained," he told Sky Sports.

"It was a complete freak (Wigan's goal). I could hardly believe it. It took a big bobble. The pitch here is poor. It's very heavy in the middle.

"Probably with the rugby coming I can see it getting worse. It was great credit to our players, because it was hard to play on.

"After the efforts they put in in midweek to get a result against Manchester City it was always going to be tough today.

"Physically it did, but also mentally it did as well. Winning the big game and then having to go again today against a side who for different reasons were up for the game and had to win it."

Moyes was delighted with the display of returning hero Steven Pienaar, while he accepts fellow new-boy Nikica Jelavic will take time to adapt to a new league and surroundings.

"I thought Steven Pienaar was arguably our best player. I thought he was terrific," he continued.

"You've got to remember Steven Pienaar was here for two or three years. He's only been away a year and he knows how we work and it's not changed that much, the players haven't changed.

"It's different for Jelavic. He's new. He'll need to be given a chance to look at the surroundings and see what we're all about."
