Cardiff expect to complete the signing of Everton teenager Darren Dennehy by the start of next week.
Bluebirds chairman Peter Ridsdale has confirmed that talks with the Republic of Ireland international defender have taken place.
And Dennehy, 19, was expected to undergo a medical at Ninian Park on Friday before the beginning of pre-season training.
"We have had talks with Everton and the player," Ridsdale told the South Wales Echo.
"He should be with us for the start of pre-season training next week."
Meanwhile, Ridsdale insists Cardiff will not be increasing their offer for Rangers striker Kris Boyd.
Rangers boss Walter Smith has indicated a desire to keep hold of Boyd, while the player is also keen to stay at Ibrox.
"We have offered Rangers £2.5million and will not be increasing that at this particular stage," added Ridsdale.
"I think it would be very silly of us to up the bid while the manager and the player are still talking about staying."
