Victor Anichebe has pulled out of the Nigeria squad to face Australia and Switzerland.
The Everton striker was only called up by Berti Vogts after Portsmouth duo Kanu and John Utaka pulled out.
But now Anichebe has ruled himself out due to a persistent hand injury - although that did not prevent him from playing against Nurnberg and Chelsea in recent games.
Anichebe's withdrawal means he is still available to represent England, despite the fact he has pledged his international future to the country of his birth and was first called up last summer.
Nigeria team officials are less than amused with Anichebe's decision.
"Berti and I watched him play with the hand against Nuremberg in a Uefa Cup game two weeks ago," said Emeka Ezeala.
"He also played against Chelsea with the bandage on.
"So, why is he dodging to play?"
Anichebe's Everton team-mate Yakubu Aiyegbeni is also a major doubt for the games due to a thigh injury.
