Sheffield United new-boy James Beattie has admitted his last season at Everton was a "nightmare", in a campaign that led to his departure from Goodison Park.

The England international suffered from a particularly difficult season in front of goal, netting only from the penalty spot, in 35 appearances.

However, fresh from his first league start and goal for his new side, Beattie says he is relishing the prospect of a promotion push, as he looks to aid The Blades' cause of regaining their top-flight status.

He told the Daily Star: "I have never doubted my ability and although the football didn't go too well last season, I was Everton's top scorer 12 months ago and was getting touted to go to the World Cup.

Frozen out

"Last season was a bit of a nightmare. If the manager doesn't fancy you any more you get frozen out and that's what happened to me.

"I was disappointed but life goes on and I am very excited and looking forward to a fresh challenge."

Eyebrows were raised at Beattie's decision to take a step down to the second tier as he completed his club record £4million move to Bramall Lane, but the 29-year-old sees his stay in the Championship as more of a short-term measure.

"It is a step down in leagues, but Sheffield United is a massive club with great support and hopefully I can help us get back up there," he continued.

Competition is healthy

"I have 81 Premiership goals, so hopefully I can add a few Championship goals."

Bryan Robson's side are particularly strong in their striking department, and Beattie has found himself with the likes of Rob Hulse, Jonathan Stead and fellow new signing Billy Sharp to compete with.

"There is a lot of quality in the side. There is competition for strikers but the competition is healthy," he said.

"I am willing to work hard to get into the team, stay there and get us back in the Premier League."
