Championship strugglers Luton Town have been linked with a shock loan swoop for Everton starlet James Vaughan.

The Premiership's youngest ever goalscorer is currently behind Victor Anichebe, James Beattie and Andy Johnson in Everton's pecking order and The Hatters are reputedly keen to bring him to Kenilworth Road.

David Moyes has previously been reluctant to loan the striker who made Premiership history when, two years ago, he scored against Crystal Palace aged just 16 years and 271 days.

Exploding onto the scene in such a memorable fashion inevitably handed the youngster the tag of 'the new Wayne Rooney', but a combination of injury and the emergence of Anichebe have limited his chances on Merseyside ever since.

Crystal Palace boss Peter Taylor admitted holding an interest in the 18-year-old in December, but according to reports in the local media, Luton are now closing in on his signature after initially missing out in January.

The capture of the striker would be a sizeable coup for Hatters boss Mike Newell, who has also brought Bjorn Runstrom in from Fulham to bolster his attacking options.

Luton are also being strongly linked with another Premiership raid, with Reading defender Aaron Brown the man in question.

After apparently missing out on the 23-year-old due to a failed medical in January, Newell could now be plotting another move for Brown as he looks to stave off the threat of relegation.
